Curatorial Text by Ulisses Carrilho
I love the one who wishes the impossible. In the face of the chaos of the world, affirm the poetry of color and form. In a next step, to deviate from them. This text invites those who, together with the artist, participate in the herculean task of giving meaning to art, to experience such paintings from the heat. Multiple, varied, inconstant, fabricated, dramatic, misunderstood, mysterious, confusing, naïve, feisty, unmeasured, seductive, enthusiastic: many are the motives that lead an individual to create art. And equally vast are the possibilities of interpretation for those who decide to come across a painting. To give the show its title, we have chosen a word that, by changing one letter of the word color, becomes, in Portuguese, a mention of climate and temperature: of energy, of that which moves the world, of that which also destroys it. That which is felt by the body, that which is produced by it. When we speak of history, those who think we narrate a succession of events are mistaken: I speak of that which survives in us – in spite of everything.
Whoever understands the forms undertaken by painter Jan Kaláb as organic is certainly not making a mistake – the previous bibliography on the artist’s production has already sufficiently pointed out this facet. But history teaches us that his pathways are as relevant as his alleged logics. When I say history, I am talking about what survives in us.
