Anatomy of Rainbow

MAGMA gallery is glad to present “Anatomy of Rainbow”, a Jan Kaláb solo-show, on view from October 22nd to November 20th, 2022 at the Ex-Chiesa di San Mattia in Bologna.
A gigantic installation, into which people will be able to enter and walk through, together with a hypnotic video projection celebrates the strong bond that exists between the Czech artist, one of the most important and well-known names of Pop Abstraction, and the Bolognese gallery. An ongoing collaboration, which has begun in the early days of MAGMA Gallery activity, has seen several times Kaláb as the protagonist of various exhibitions over time.

For the first time, the artist confronts an environment other than the art gallery. Indeed, The Ex Chiesa di San Mattia, with the complexities of its proportions and the ancient frescos in its niches, represents a new dialogue opportunity between art and the public/audience.

The huge site-specific installation, measuring 6×4 meters, welcomes the spectators and guides them inside, in a play of optical illusions, loosening along the whole place and creating a pictorial space able to express Jan Kaláb poetic with tridimensionality. Recalling the sculptural gigantism he has already experienced in the past, the artist reaches a new level of his artistic language, revealing maturity and awareness never achieved before.
Walking inside the path described by this magnific installation, the visitor arrives at a big video projection, where what at first sight seems to be a painting, starts to mutate its forms and colours, defining spirals and movements increasing in complexity, hypnotising the viewer, and then going back to its former equilibrium.
